Cal Poly Cross Country and Track and Field has a rich history of success on the National stage. The University not only offers a beautiful place to train year round, but a great education that attracts the best and brightest student from across the country. To continue to compete for conference championships and national rankings, the coaching staff needs additional resources to help fund the NCAA maximum number of scholarships.

Coach Mark Conover | 2010 to 2022
Mark Conover was named Cal Poly’s Director of Track & Field and Cross Country in December of 2009 and led the Mustangs to 17 total appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Among those appearances, he’s coached the men’s squad to five Top 25 national rankings, including No. 10 in 2004-05. Conover coached five Cal Poly cross country teams to top-25 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a No. 10 national finish by the men's team in 2004. In addition, 17 of his men's cross country teams and seven women's squads from 1998 through 2019 claimed Big West Conference crowns. Conover was named the Big West Cross Country Coach of the Year a combined 19 times on either the men’s or women’s sides. Conover directly coached a total of 10 All-Americans and 71 individual conference champions between track and cross country.

Coach Terry Crawford | 1992 to 2009
Crawford has had an illustrious coaching career. At Cal Poly, she served as the head cross country coach from 1992-96 and then became the director of track & field and cross country from 1996-2009. With the Mustangs, she oversaw 42 Division I All-Americans and 19 Division II All-Americans, and three of Cal Poly's 10 Division I national champions — Paula Serrano (women's pole vault, 1998-99) and Sharon Day-Monroe (women's high jump, 2005). The four-time Big West Cross Country Coach of the Year helped the Cal Poly men's cross country team capture nine Big West titles and the women's team claim two during her tenure.

Coach Brooks Johnson | 1992 to 1996
Brooks Johnson's prestigious coaching career spanned more than six decades and with the Mustangs, he oversaw 45 individual conference champions and 27 Division II All-Americans. Johnson coached countless Olympic and World Championship level athletes during his legendary career, serving as a member of the Team USA coaching staff for the Olympic Games in 1976, 1984, 2004 and 2008. One of the most respected coaches in all of track and field, Johnson was inducted into the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame in 1997.

Coach Lance Harter | 1979 to 1990
Lance Harter coached the Mustang women's cross country team to eight consecutive NCAA Division II titles (1982-89) and five national Division II track titles (1982-84, 1989-90). Harter was Division II national coach of the year 10 times.

Coach Steve Miller | 1976 to 1981
Coach Steve Miller led the Mustang track and field teams to five NCAA Division II national championship titles (three in track and field and two in cross country), and eight California Collegiate Athletic Association titles (four in track and field and four in cross country). Miller coached several All-Americans and NCAA champions and was named NCAA National Coach of the Year five times in his career.
